Bonsai – Size v/s Meaning

“Bonsai” is a word associated with plants. Every garden lover imagines his own favorites after hearing “bonsai”. I have my own set at my home; these are the ones which take most of my care and time. I just love spending hours watching their beauty and size.

This “World Environment Day”, I was getting some off-the-track thoughts associated with the word bonsai except for the obvious association.

Bonsai – small in size but very big in meaning. A bonsai is small in size but it’s a full grown tree. Can anybody would have imagined seeing oranges on a 20 inch plant some years ago, no, because in those years there was no need to develop this species. People used to have big lawns and gardens to grow vegetables, fruits and flowers. But, today we humans have consumed each and every inch of space available on earth and plants are also forced to shrink. Bonsai(s) of a lot of breeds of plants have been developed to give you all the fruit in your tiny kitchen garden. Kitchen garden also looks bigger these days; our green lawns have reduced to a few green pots only.

We, humans, are supposedly called the intelligent of all species, but are we really doing what is expected out of us? We are exploiting all natural resources to the maximum possible extent. In spite of knowing that with this usage speed we’ll run out of almost everything before our children will be 30 years old, we are not ready to adjust even a muscle.

Look at some of the reasons quoted,

“I have to use plastic bags because who’ll carry that cloth/paper/jute bag to Green Park’s Market. Think of my standard yaar.”

“Car is a status symbol, how can I travel in metro with your junior engineer sitting besides me. How does it matter to you if I can afford the petrol cost? Pollution, oh please, as if my not using petrol will cut all the pollution.”

“I don’t have time to look where my maid disposes off the waste. At least my home is clean.”

Is it all what we are concerned about these days? We can talk pages about environment and how we can save it when it comes to a child’s essay competition, but when it comes to getting on our toes, we’ll have aching muscles every day.

I remember bonsai plants whenever I hear any such thing from my neighborhood. These plants have so very well adjusted themselves to the resources available in that small pot and some water, to give you the full flavor of a big tree. It’s not always about big size. The time is knocking on our doors for so long and now it’s literally slamming hard to help us hear that be open for adjustments and changes. Shed away that high-status & attitude welded to your minds and think why we have created these bonsai(s). If you want to save your environment and want your children to enjoy the pleasure of sitting under the shade of a Neem tree, then act today.
